Ontario iPod Pharmacy

music heals

Some of you may remember my push to collect iPods for Music Heals a couple autumns ago. Being that March is Music Therapy Month Chris Brandt (the co founder of Music Heals) and I figured my Eastern Canadian tour dates in February would be the perfect lead up and opportunity to get the iPod Pharmacy going again.

Do you have an old mp3 player that you’ve kept around but don’t use any more since you upgraded? Here’s your chance to repurpose your old mp3 players by donating them as a tool for music therapists to use with their patients. All of the devices that I collect over will be distributed by Music Heals to music therapists in your community to aid them in their practice. If you have a device that is still functioning that you would like to repurpose, please stop by one of the tour dates listed on the poster below.

Please help spread the word by sharing this post.
Thanks so much for your continuing support,

Left on a Train, Arrived on a Bus: Mere First World Problems

After a short week of being in transit I’ve arrived at my final destination: Toronto. For those that have never travelled Canada via train I can honestly say it was a purely pleasant trip with exceptional service, amazing food and, as you could probably guess, the scenery of the Canadian Landscape is absolutely stunning.

photo (15)I must admit, however, that being an artist on board gave me some of the luxuries that I likely wouldn’t have enjoyed had I travelled on my own dime. But if you can afford your own sleeper car and aren’t worried about arriving a little bit late, I would highly recommend crossing Canada VIA train. Waking up with to the rocky mountains or the sun rising across the prairies being broadcast on your widescreen window is enough to make anyone fall in love in my opinion. (That is, I guess, if you could fall asleep on the train. I have no qualms sleeping basically anywhere).

Without a lot of explanation, I posted to instagram etc the other night that because of a train derailing we would be finishing the journey via bus. Not to worry, it wasn’t our passenger train that derailed. A freight train travelling east of Hornepayne, Ontario had derailed and blocked the tracks in both directions. When we arrived in Hornepayne we had to wait for a bus to pick us up and take us to Toronto.photo 3

I’m sad to say that I was a little ashamed of all of the humming, hawing and belly aching I heard from my fellow passengers. Some were up in arms fighting to get their whole trip refunded. Some looking for seemingly anything and everything to whine about to the VIA rail staff. My bus for instance was “too hot” during the night. There was apparently a system malfunction and for the bus driver to be able to defrost his windshield the whole heating system had to be on. As the VIA rail staff walked the aisles passing out drinks and pop to aid in the situation I heard a light mention that the second bus (carrying the economy class) didn’t even have heat. The whole bus was freezing cold for the whole 14 hour bus trip.

I really had to hand it to the VIA rail staff that I witnessed. Their 5 star service didn’t stop until we were sent off on our merry way. One of the staff members even took the initiative to stock up on hand sani wipes to offer to passengers emerging from the bus bathroom when he found out the bathroom didn’t have any hand sanitizer.

All in all, I got what I wanted out of travelling via train. I made some new friends. I shared my music with people I never would have come into contact with. I made it to Toronto. And I had an adventure.

Now to have some fun in the Golden Horseshoe. First shows start this weekend:

Friday Jan 24 in Chatham @ Left Wing Tattoo
Saturday Jan 25 in Windsor @ Phog Lounge

Feist “I feel it all” (train cover)

While crossing this fair country by train, I took a vote on my social media streams yesterday as to which song i should make a video

1. Feist – I feel it all

2. Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

3. Beatles – Don’t let me down

4. Dominique Fricot – original

Feist took an early lead and I was happy to see that a good many of you did want to hear an original. I however lost cell reception after only the first half hour when Feist was well in the lead. Here is my VIA Rail train car version of Feist’s “i feel it all”.

To travel all that distance for three I just have to offer up my musical skills for 3 x 45 minute sets a day. I’m not allowed to announce that I’m selling CD’s but I AM allowed to sell them.

I’m hoping that there will be internet on the train so I can keep you updated as I go. If you don’t already you can follow me on Instagram, Facebook and twitter for more current updates.

Photos from “One Night Stand VI” Up

Over 5 years ago a group of Vancouver musicians led by my good friend Josh McNorton came up with an idea to throw a New Years Eve Party where musicians and friends within the Vancouver Indie Music Scene would come together to play a random assortment of hit cover songs for one night only. The collective named the event “One Night Stand” intending for it to be a one time only deal.

Everybody involved enjoyed the event so much, however, that “One Night Stand” became a New Year’s Tradition. With each year the event became more successful, attracting bigger Vancouver names and with them, larger and larger audiences. This year we were fortunate to expand into the grandiose Rickshaw Theatre for a good ol’ bash.

Photos from the event have now been posted to facebook. If you were there and checked out the Photobooth, find and tag your photos in one of these albums.

There is also a photo album dedicated to the band. For those of you that missed it. Adaline and I did an “inspired” version of “Pony” by Ginuwine.

To get a taste you can click through the play by play about half way through the album.

Album Sneak Peak…On the last day of Freakmas

1521352_620710894632944_1791391228_n
Well, we have come to the 12th and final day of Freakmas. It’s been pretty fun to do something new every day with you all. I think it’s safe to say that come next Christmas I will be repeating the 12 days of Freakmas.

But yes, I am stalling. What is there to win on the 12th day of Freakmas this year? I probably shouldn’t do this but I can’t stop myself. As you may know I recently recorded a full length album with mr. Warne Livesey (the midnight oil, matthew good, no sinner). I am still preparing for the release of this record in hopefully spring of 2014, but one very lucky contestant will get  an advance copy of said record.

How to win an advance copy of my new album

Screen shot 2013-12-24 at 12.24.42 AMI’m gonna leave this one pretty open ended. The requirements are just that you have to tweet my twitter handle (@dominiquefricot) and mention anything at all about my new record. Maybe a suggestion for the album title? Or your favourite song off of the new record (yes i know you may not have heard anything off of it yet, but suspend disbelief shall we?), or whatever you can imagine. I will give points for creativity and positivity. As food for thought you may notice I’ve included my track listing. in this photo. Not the picture of me with my boss, no the one with the random titles to the left here.

Thank you all once again for taking part in the #12daysoffreakmas

It’s been a slice

2 Tickets To One Night Stand 2013

Screen shot 2013-12-23 at 12.05.35 AM

Every New Years Eve in Vancouver a great group of local musicians come together to put on a really special night of awesome music. This year as you can see above we have members from Mother Mother, Said the Whale, The Belle Game, Yukon Blonde, Adaline, Brasstronaut, myself and so much more.

For the 11th Day of Freakmas I’ve scored two tickets to give away to the NYE party that will be going down at the Rikshaw theatre.

How to Win

If you’d like to enter yourself in the contest to win 2 tickets to this year’s One Night Stand, all I’m asking is for you to tweet the link with where to buy tickets: www.hipcity.ca/tickets and include the event’s official hashtag #ONS2013. On the night of December 23 I’ll announce from my Facebook and Twitter who won the 2 tickets. Make sure with the link and the hashtag (#ONS2013) that you throw in a little something to pump up the event because it’s going to be one heck of a good time.

Good luck,

Dom
